How many hours are spent getting these set up, finding a location to host it, putting up signs, and then getting your team in place to do the hard work? And what’s the end result? A few hundred dollars and 10 poorly washed cars.

Let me offer an alternative; Custom Car Magnets. A well-designed custom magnet will practically sell itself. You just need to collect the money.

A fundraising car magnet does more than just earn money, it creates awareness. Imagine hundreds of cars, driving around town with your magnet. You can safely assume that each of those cars will be seen by at least 100 other cars every day. You do the math; it works!

Car Magnets for your PTA and PTO

Google “PTA and PTO Fundraising Ideas” and you get the usual suggestions… car washes, selling chocolate bars, selling magazine subscriptions, etc. All of these ideas, and more, should be part of your fundraising efforts. Branded merchandise sales (customized with your full color school mascot) are also a great source of revenue. Some examples of branded merchandise are

  • Custom Car Magnets from ARC Marketing (we’re biased)

  • Custom Decals from ARC Marketing (we offer these also)
  • Custom Baseball Caps from a local screen printer

These customized goodies, printed with your school mascot, tend to be very popular as fundraising items and your school can make some serious money selling them to parents, faculty, local business leaders, and the population at large. An additional benefit to raising money is that they provide a little bit of advertising, or “awareness”. As more and more of these items start appearing around your community, your school gets more and more recognition.

T-shirts and baseball caps can generate quite a bit of exposure, but these items tend to only be worn on weekends (unless your work’s Casual Friday allows for this type of attire!). And then after a few months, the T-shirt ends up in the rag-basket and is only used to wax the car.

Car magnets on the other hand, provide exposure every time your car is on the road. Can you guess how many other cars will see your car magnet on a daily basis? Of course this is hard to measure, but conservative estimates are a minimum of 100 cars daily (this would be for a very small community) to more than a thousand cars each day (easy to achieve in large markets like Southern California).

Car magnets also can provide a larger profit margin than T-shirts and caps. First, always use a high quality T-shirt (you should only use the best T-shirts from known suppliers such as Hanes, Gildan, etc.), otherwise you are going to need to handle a lot of quality complaints beginning a few weeks after the fundraiser. Doing a quick internet search for pricing, I have found that several of the larger on-line custom T-shirt companies will charge you about $13.50 per shirt (with a one color front logo and a full color larger logo on the back) for 250 shirts in various sizes. How much do you think you could sell each T-shirt for? Would you pay $25 for a T-shirt? Probably not. $20? Maybe. $15? You’re getting warmer, but a $15 each, you are only making about a buck and a half per shirt. Plus, you’ll be shelling out $3,375 up front for those shirts. Sounds like a lot of risk for only $375 profit (at a $15 sales price).

On the other hand, 250 fully customized car magnets from ARC Marketing will only cost $2.00 each (fully customized with your team logo) and you can sell them $6 to $10 each. Let’s assume that your parents and faculty are very involved with supporting your school and you sell them for $10 each. Doing some quick math, I come up with the following… you’ll be shelling out about $500 for 250 custom magnets and at $10 each, you’ll be pulling in $2,500. That’s about $2,000 in profit. This makes selling T-Shirts seem like an exercise in futility.

Again, we’re not saying not to use T-Shirts and candy fundraisers. We’re just saying you can make a lot more money with a lot less work and risk with custom car magnets from ARC Marketing.

Designing a powerful, effective car magnet is not difficult, but not everyone can do it! Let the experts at ARC Marketing help.

Which do you think would make a more effective car magnet…

  1. A simple centered logo, with one or two colors, with just a few words above and below the logo.
  2. A simple centered logo and lots of words to get your message out there
  3. Intricate detailed logo, with lots of colors, and lots of words to get your message out there

Actually, the answer is #1 (most of the time!). Although all of these magnets would cost the same (we do not charge more for extra colors, nor do we charge for the time our artists spend working on your design) so if intricate and detailed is what you want… go for it.

If you think about the nature of a car magnet, then a simple design might be the most effective. Remember that most people are going to see your magnet on a moving car. That moving car could be going 65 mph. if your car is standing still, your magnet is still going to be viewed from several car lengths away. When you take this into consideration, then #1 looks like the winner.

Sometimes, your school name just cannot be abbreviated and the message you want to convey cannot be shortened (the more words you use, the smaller the letters will be). Sometimes the logo you have to work with is just a very detailed piece of artwork. Sometimes your mission statement is so critical to your magnet that it needs to be included, no matter what. Well, in that situation, we encourage you to go for it. Even these detailed, wordy magnets get read. They just need to be on a parked car. If that car is in a parking lot at the mall, or at a football game, hundreds of people will be walking past it and noticing it. OK, so now #2 or #3 is looking like the winner.

How do you know which way to go? Of course we have an answer for that too. As mentioned earlier, we do not charge you anything for the time our artist spends working on your design. So why not request two designs? Get a simple one, and get a complex one… then compare them and choose the stronger of the two. How many PTA’s have an “Annual Giving Campaign”?  Come on; raise your hands. Most PTA’s and PTO’s have annual giving campaigns and they tend to provide the majority of funding each and every year.

Often, the PTA asks each family to contribute a minimum set amount to the campaign. This money is usually used to fund the gap between what the state provides, and the true cost of delivering a quality education to each student.

Sometimes local businesses will donate goods or services for anyone who donates a certain amount. For example, a local travel agent might donate a $1,000 travel/vacation voucher, and everyone who contributes gets a ticket for a raffle where the travel voucher will be awarded. Some schools offer tickets to galas for receptions where the parents can mingle.

Regardless of what is offered, most families give, and give big. After all, it’s their kids who will ultimately benefit from the extra funding.

Roy Cloud School is a Kindergarten through 8th Grade neighborhood school in Redwood City, CA.
The Roy Cloud School PTO is an amazing group. They are very organized and conduct numerous fundraisers throughout the year to support various school programs that probably otherwise would not be viable.

Assets School 60th Anniversary Car MagnetSchool Fundraising Car Magnets is the best way to raise money for the programs that your standard budget does not cover.

Assets School is a critical and vital part of the educational system in Hawaii that provides premier educational services to students who learn differently, such as students who are gifted and/or dyslexic, or simply bright learners struggling in school. Assets provides a learning environment for youngsters who faltered in typical, mainstream settings and need an alternative approach. There is no other school like it in the State.

Over the next several years, Assets School will experience unprecedented growth and expansion. Recently, Assets purchased the three-and-a-half acre campus that they had leased for the last 21 years with plans to build a new campus for their K-8 program on it. The two-year construction project is scheduled to begin in June 2015. A capital campaign will be launched to raise funds, support, and awareness for building the new campus.

Also in June 2015, Assets High School will move to a new location and will be named: Assets High School: Academy of the Pacific Campus. This will provide Assets a greater capacity to serve students who learn differently.

2015 marks Assets’ 60th anniversary. Assets School has been transforming students’ lives since its inception in 1955. Our theme, “60 years of learning that transform lives,” celebrates Assets’ vision to create a community in which all children thrive and realize their own potential, so that society benefits from their unique talents and abilities.

With so many incredible milestones in 2015, we plan to share our pride with the greater Hawaii community in a variety of different ways.

The 60th anniversary car magnet will be given to parents who join our parent association group, Assets Parent Ohana (APO), this year. The magnet will also be given as a gift to some of our major donors to celebrate our school. Our hope is to raise Assets’ visibility in our community as many of us proudly display our magnets on our cars. Living on Oahu, we tend to spend a fair amount of time sitting in our cars during our commute. During our valuable commute time people will come to know that Assets has been transforming lives for 60 years. Gymnastics…this is one sport that doesn’t get enough love. It seems like the rest of the world only pays attention to gymnastics every four years at the Olympics. But behind the scenes, during those other 3 years and 11 months, parents, coaches and gymnasts are working their butts off, training and competing.

Gymnastics is not an inexpensive sport. The costs can be massive. Uniforms, classes, coaches, travel… it all adds up; fast!

Just like with every other sport, parents of kids in gymnastics have to justify huge expenses. Trying to balance paying the gym fees instead of making the house payment is a conversation that comes up every month around the dinner table.

Your child usually starts with a simple gymnastic class when they are very young. Some gyms have tot classes for children as young as 18 months and some have beginner classes for 5-year-olds. With beginning gymnastics classes, the bills are just starting. Even in the beginning classes, parents need to buy basic equipment, uniforms, etc.

If your child showed some promise as a “Tumbling Turtle” or as a “Leaping Lizard” in the 5 year old class, then you are ready to move them up to an academy that will take them to the next level up, and take your finances to the next level down! These expenses are why most gymnastics academies have parent-run booster clubs. These booster clubs are there for one primary reason… fundraising to offset the cost of trying to become an elite gymnast. We feel your pain.

Uniquely Shaped Car Magnets

Custom Shaped car magnets for fundraising.

Although round and oval magnets are the most common (they are also the most durable), occasionally a unique “die cut” magnet makes a more powerful statement.

Some car magnet companies charge extra for uniquely shaped magnets, so be sure to ask about that before you get too deep into the design process. ARC Marketing does not charge extra for uniquely shaped custom designed car magnets, and we also do not charge more for extra colors.

There are a few things you should avoid when designing a “die cut” magnet, and we can go over those things with you in detail when we start working on your design, but basically you should try to avoid sharp “inside” angles, and long thin projections radiating out from the center of the magnet. These are considered weak points of the magnet and could tear over time if the magnet is removed and reattached over and over.
